Frequently Asked Questions
Our physiotherapists will ask the child and/or caregiver questions regarding their mobility, pain, and/or concern. They will then conduct an in-depth assessment to look at how your child moves. This may include watching your child walk (gait assessment), examine posture, strength and flexibility assessment, joint range of motion, and balance.
During your first visit to our pediatric physiotherapy clinic, here’s what you can anticipate:
- Initial Consultation: Our physiotherapists will ask the child and/or caregiver questions about mobility, pain, and any specific concerns you may have.
- Physical/ motor assessment: The physiotherapist will conduct a thorough assessment of how your child moves. This may include:
- Gait Assessment: Observing your child’s walking patterns.
- Postural Evaluation: Checking alignment and posture.
- Strength and Flexibility Assessment: Evaluating muscle strength and flexibility.
- Joint Range of Motion: Assessing the movement capabilities of various joints.
- Balance Evaluation: Testing your child’s balance and coordination.
Comfortable Clothing: Please ensure your child is wearing comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
Favorite Toys: Feel free to bring along any of your child’s favorite toys to help them feel more relaxed during the visit.
Each pediatric physiotherapy treatment plan is tailored to meet the unique needs of your child and may include:
- Exercise Program:
- Strengthening Exercises: Focus on building muscle strength.
- Flexibility Exercises: Improve range of motion and reduce stiffness.
- Balance and Coordination Exercises: Enhance stability and motor skills.
- Hands-On Treatment:
- Soft Tissue Release: Techniques to relieve muscle tension and improve mobility.
- Taping: Support for muscles and joints to aid recovery and prevent injury.
- Passive or Active Stretching: Methods to enhance flexibility.
- Joint Mobilizations: Gentle movements to increase joint range of motion.
- Education:
- Addressing any concerns you may have about your child’s development.
- Sharing knowledge on proper posture and effective exercise techniques.
- Providing information on sport-specific training and developmental milestone timelines.
- Modalities:
- Electrical Therapy: Use of TENS and IFC for pain relief and muscle stimulation.
- LASER Therapy: Non-invasive treatment to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
- Shockwave Therapy: When indicated, to enhance recovery and alleviate pain.
Our aim is to empower both you and your child with the tools and knowledge necessary for optimal growth and recovery. Each session will be designed to support your child’s specific goals and challenges!
Your initial pediatric physiotherapy appointment should take 40 to 60 minutes. Follow up pediatric appointments can take 30 to 40 minutes. If you are unable to fill out the new patient intake form please arrive 20 minutes early to allow time for this.
