Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) / Dry Needling
Our physiotherapists are certified in dry needling (intramuscular stimulation) and are committed to using this technique only with your consent. IMS can significantly enhance the healing rate of injuries and alleviate pain.
What is IMS & How Does It Work?
IMS involves inserting a thin acupuncture needle into a muscle without injecting any substance, hence the term “dry” needling. Here’s how it works:
- The needle may be left in place for a few minutes or moved slightly to induce a muscle twitch.
- This “twitch” response can help decrease pain signals from your brain to the affected muscle.
- It can also reduce muscle tone, improve blood circulation, and deliver nutrients to the area, facilitating healing.
How It Feels:
- Initial Sensation: The insertion of the needle can be uncomfortable but usually lasts only a second or two.
- Post-Treatment: It’s normal to feel soreness or achiness in the treated muscle for a few days, similar to post-workout muscle soreness. Many patients describe the discomfort as “relieving.”
Your physiotherapist will provide detailed information about IMS or dry needling and discuss how it can specifically benefit your condition during your treatment sessions. Your comfort and understanding are our top priorities!
