Contusions
Contusions commonly known as bruises, result from falls, impacts, or traumas to the body. They often occur in sports, such as when a player gets hit in the leg or from falling or colliding with a hard surface.
Signs and symptoms of a contusion include:
- redness & swelling at the injured area
- pain at the injured area
- stiffness or decreased range of motion of the injured area or lumb (for instance decreased ability to bend your knee due to a contusion in your thigh or quadricep muscle)
- pain when walking, standing , or weight bearing if the lower extremity has a contusion
Treatment options:
- patient education (rest, elevate, compress)
- manual therapy & manipulation (depending on contusion severity)
- soft tissue release therapy (depending on contusion severity)
- exercise rehabilitation & home exercise programs
- Intramuscular Stimulation (muscles around the contusion)
- LASER therapy
- ultrasound
- therapeutic taping (K taping, sprain taping, joint taping)
- sport injury prevention
- electrotherapy
- cryotherapy/ heat therapy
- passive and active stretching
- kinesiology
